Crocodile Island

Crocodile Island is located at the southern portion of Boracay. The island is called as such not because it is infested with man-eating crocodiles but its shape is similar to the reptile when seen from a distance.

Although it is ideal for snorkeling, enthusiasts should be wary of this area because the currents in this part of the island can be strong. However, for those who love diving, there is no need to worry because Crocodile Island is one of the best places to go diving in Boracay.

Crocodile Island provides divers and snorkellers with an opportunity to have a closer look at some of the islands marine life. With a depth of 80 feet, the southern tip of the island is home to soft and leathery corals as well as gorgonians that are comparable with Borneos Sipadan Island.

At the drop off point, measuring 197 meters, there are several small canyons that abound with different varieties of fish such as squirrelfish, cardinalfish, soldierfish, to name just a few.

At a depth of 45 feet, divers would have a chance to rub shoulders with garden eels, sea snakes and anemones, and several whip corals. The waters of Crocodile Island is rich in marine life ranging from parrotfish, snappers, sea cucumbers, moray eels, certain species of nidibranch, among others.

The walls of Crocodile Island are characterized by an increasing slope from 5 meters to 24 meters and the flow of the current is ideal for the survival of wide variety of corals.

Close in the vicinity of Crocodile Island, there are a couple of diving spots that are worth visiting as well. Laurel Islands 1 & 2 provides a good view of corals and a wide range of fish species. The bigger island consists of an 8 meter swimthrough that can be interesting to divers and snorkelers.

Just like in Crocodile Island, snorkelers should be wary of the strong currents in this area. Channel Drift provides great opportunities to go drift diving as well as a view of whitetip sharks and trevallies.

A visit to Crocodile Island is included in the island hopping trip. The whole package is worth PHP2500 and takes about four to six hours.

So next time you encounter the word Crocodile Island, never be deceived by the name. For the island derived after the dangerous reptile is one of the best places to visit when going on a vacation in Boracay Island.
